Efficient power generation in the smallest of spaces thanks to high efficiency
TURBONIK has made the steam turbine fit for the 21st century. MDTs are the most efficient steam turbines in their power range. With the same fuel input, they can generate up to 40 percent more electricity than comparable steam turbines. With an electrical output of up to 600 kW, MDTs can reliably generate up to 5 GWh of electricity per year in an energy-efficient CHP plant. This is equivalent to the annual consumption of approximately 1,000 four-person households and takes up little more space than a euro-pallet plus control cabinet. This makes the MDT ideal for use in mature steam systems with limited installation space and suitable for operation on standard industrial saturated steam boilers. The extremely compact design of the rotating components allows very high speeds to be achieved. The generator and turbine runner are directly coupled as a steam turbine set on one shaft. There is no need for a lossy gearbox. Compared to conventional steam turbines, TURBONIK Micro Steam Turbines use 50 percent less material, which means that no special foundations are required for their installation due to their low weight. This means that MDTs can be used almost anywhere. They can be easily installed on site and integrated into the existing infrastructure.
CO₂-avoidance through effective fuel utilisation
Active climate protection is no longer just a buzzword, but has become an integral part of our everyday lives in recent years. However, in both the private and business sectors, the implementation of the necessary measures is often slowed down by the high effort and considerable costs involved. This makes it all the more important to have effective solutions that can be implemented easily and cost-effectively. TURBONIK offers steam-using companies the opportunity to use pressure reductions of small steam volumes for economical power generation and to avoid up to 2,000 tons of CO₂ per year, depending on the fuel used. If the steam used is also generated from natural gas or climate-friendly biomass, this also results in a corresponding displacement of coal-fired electricity from the grid. Sustainability also plays an important role in the design of the turbine itself: the MDTs are completely oil-free. TURBONIK relies on environmentally friendly water lubrication of the bearings, which is being used for the first time worldwide for steam turbines. This not only eliminates the need for regular oil changes, but also eliminates the need for costly environmental protection measures.
Saving energy costs through independent power generation
Thanks to the significant savings potential, TURBONIK micro steam turbines can achieve payback periods of just 1.5 years, even without government subsidies. This is because electricity will remain significantly more expensive than the underlying fuel (e.g. natural gas or biomass) in the long term. This is due to the way prices are set in the electricity market and the foreseeable increase in electricity demand as a result of the energy transition. The use of existing energy potentials (e.g. by pressure reduction) in the steam network for power generation with an MDT not only reduces CO₂ emissions but also saves considerable energy costs. Overall, user companies can achieve a high total return, organize their own power generation and become more independent from energy suppliers.
