The Micro Steam Turbines from TURBONIK

MORE POWER FROM LITTLE STEAM

Steam Turbines for the 21st Century

Generating up to 600 kW of power from steam.

Efficiency is the key to sustainable success. In business, this means making the most of all available resources. With TURBONIK’s Micro Steam Turbines (MDT), companies using steam can now maximize their steam potential – economically, reliably and ecologically. For the first time, MDTs enable cost-effective self-generation of up to 600 kW from small steam volumes. These turbines are suitable for a wide range of industries and can be customized to meet specific requirements. Their compact size and light weight make them ideal for companies with limited space.

TURBONIK- Your experts for efficient turbomachinery

TURBONIK was founded in 2017 as a spin-off of Fraunhofer UMSICHT. The company’s founders previously conducted research on the optimization of ORC systems and turbines. In the course of this work, they have repeatedly overcome the limits of conventional turbine technology and developed the idea for a completely new approach to the design of TURBONIK micro steam turbines, which is focused on the needs and circumstances of manufacturing companies.

The MDTs are designed as simple and effective efficiency measures for use in industrial plants where steam quantities and space requirements for conventional turbines are insufficient. The innovative turbine technology opens up many new applications for additional power generation, helping to reduce high energy costs and CO₂ emissions. Its material-saving design and high efficiency have been recognized with awards including the Innovation Award of the German Steel Industry.

Our customers today include steam-using companies in a wide variety of industries: public utilities (power plants and waste-to-energy plants), steel mills, the chemical industry, food manufacturers, wood processors, automotive suppliers and recycling companies.

While MDT is concerned with the generation of electricity from smaller quantities of steam, TURBONIK is working in partnership with Fraunhofer UMSICHT on other technologies for the ecological and economical use of existing process steam. A recently completed project is the development of a steam turbocharger for the coupling of steam and compressed air networks. In the near future, this will enable industrial companies to significantly reduce both their primary energy consumption and their CO₂ emissions when generating compressed air.

Since 2021 TURBONIK is located in the hydrogen user center h2herten. This means that the company’s headquarters, development and production are now all in one place. And just as we provide our customers with offers for resource conservation and energy efficiency, we also focus on sustainability and a future-oriented energy supply for our own energy consumption. Since 2009, h2herten has been a pioneer in applied electrolysis and hydrogen research. The companies located here get their electricity from wind and photovoltaics. If there is excess production, it is converted into hydrogen, stored and converted back into electricity using fuel cell systems.

The Micro Steam Turbine is designed for companies and facilities that use steam. This includes medium-sized manufacturing companies as well as large chemical and power plants. The turbines are designed to be easy to integrate and operate. Due to the high level of automation, the MDT does not require any experience in steam turbine operation

There must be a pressure differential between the steam generator and the consumer or within a steam network. The pressure ratio of turbine inlet pressure to outlet pressure should be greater than 2 as a guideline, and the steam mass flow should be greater than 1.2 tons per hour. We then use this information to individually calculate the electrical output. Depending on the amount of steam, lower pressure ratios are possible. The maximum steam flow is approximately 10 tons per hour. The MDT is designed for use in steam systems with a nominal pressure of PN 40. Power is generated at 400 V and supplied at the site's low voltage level.

The economic advantage is essentially the difference between the cost of the fuel used to generate steam and the value of the electricity produced. The larger the difference, the more economical the operation of the turbine. In addition, there are extensive tax incentives in Germany, as well as possible surcharges for electricity from cogeneration.

In Germany, tax incentives include a full refund of the energy tax on the fuel used for steam generation and cogeneration with the MDT.

To calculate the CO₂ savings, the fuel-dependent emissions from power generation with an MDT are compared to the emissions from power purchased from the grid (power mix). If natural gas or biomass is used as the fuel for steam generation, CO₂ emissions are saved by displacing grid electricity, which has a greater CO₂ impact. In fact, when biomass is used, the electricity generated is nearly zero CO₂.

Turbonik's scope of supply includes the steam turbine with generator, control cabinets with power electronics and control system as well as the control valve at the turbine inlet and the shut-off valve at the turbine outlet as standard. Turbonik also provides support for integration planning, commissioning and long-term turbine maintenance.
